Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s national call to raise awareness of heart disease as women’s No. 1 killer and empower women with the knowledge they need to take charge of their health.

This year’s luncheon was a huge success with over 650 attendees and more than $429,000 raised, with money still coming in! The event was emceed by 10TV’s Andrea Cambern and Sunny 95’s Shawn Ireland, and paired three local survivors and their physicians who shared the message of how to know thy heart.  All three women delivered their inspirational story with each complimented by health tips and life-saving information from their cardiologist. The message they hoped luncheon attendees would take home – know thy heart and how to make the right choices for your body.

Cardinal Health also announced that they will return for a second year as a Columbus Goes Red sponsor and we will continue to work hand-in-hand with the American Heart Association and the Go Red For Women campaign.  Among many other notable achievements last year, the association and Cardinal Health have been able to help educate nearly 100 medical professionals by providing each of them a Go Red For Women physician toolkit, they have participated in a local billboard campaign, and raised awareness in the community and among their 3,500 local employees. The American Heart Association and Cardinal Health have truly worked together to create healthier lives for women in central Ohio.

Also announced at the luncheon was Terri Hill’s, president of Nationwide Better Health, acceptance as the 2010-2011 Go Red For Women chair.

Heart disease and stroke are the greatest health threats women face. Coronary heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of women over age 20. One in three women will die of heart disease or stroke, compared with one in 30 from breast cancer. However, heart disease is largely preventable – it only takes the power to become aware of the risks and make the right choices to prevent it. That is why the Go Red For Women movement calls on women to Speak Up for their hearts and make the right choices to change the statistics and save lives.
